Studying abroad

Especially for students of cultural anthropology and European ethnology, dealing with a different tradition of science as well as dealing with foreignness in a foreign university city is a profitable experience. We would therefore like to introduce different routes abroad on this page. We would also recommend to acquire knowledge in less taught languages and to study outside the German, English and French speaking countries.

Also lecturers of our institute can teach at the partner universities (see below). Conversely, foreign lecturers can also take part in the exchange.

As part of the EU ERASMUS program we have contacts in Szeged (Hungary), Lisbon (Portugal), Bratislava (Slovakia), Warsaw (Poland), Ankara (Turkey, Ankara University, Hacettepe University), Istanbul (Kadir Has University Istanbul) and Bordeau (université Bordeaux Segalen), where two students of the Institute of Folklore can study for one or two semesters. The costs of the host universities are not incurred and students usually receive a small financial subsidy to their livelihood. Basic knowledge (level B1) in the respective national language must be obtained before the beginning of studies. For this the visit of i.d.R. two consecutive language courses necessary.

Application deadline for the WS is January 31st.

Application deadline for the SoSe is September 30th.

For the application, an appointment must be arranged with the Erasmus coordinator in the study office.

Within the framework of the European Confederation of Upper Rhine Universities (EUCOR), students are able to attend courses of the Department of Cultural Studies and European Ethnology of the University of Basel and of the Département d'ethnologie of the Université Marc Bloch in Strasbourg.

Internship abroad with financial support
You can complete your internship abroad at any time. Of course, the technical reference is a prerequisite for recognition here. In non-European countries, therefore, there are very few potential institutions - relevant would be e.g. Embassies (Kulturreferate) or Goethe-Instituts.

Also for an internship abroad there is financial support: The internship should then go 3-12 months. You also have to find the internship yourself. If you have found potential institutions, you can talk to the study office about the recognition.

Recognition of academic achievements

The courses attended at foreign universities should be clearly assigned to the fields of European ethnology. We recommend that you arrange your own study plan with us at the host university prior to your stay abroad in order to ensure the smoothest possible recognition of the services provided. Responsible for the recognition of external study achievements is the study office.
