Cultural anthropology transnational: master studies in Basel and Freiburg i. Br.

Since the winter semester 2017/18, the institutes Basel and Freiburg i. Br. A cross-border cooperating master's program. Those who study in this way benefit from two strong research locations and get to know different academic cultures. The study follows common priorities: The issues of borders, migration, politics and economics are not just the situation in the tri-border region. They are also part of the core of modern cultural anthropology represented by the institutes in Basel and Freiburg. Other focal points are cultural practice and cultural policy. Thus, important occupational fields in museums, archives, municipalities, administration and in public relations are taken into consideration. Organizationally, the collaboration draws on the possibilities of the European Campus (trinational university association on the Upper Rhine). Here are the mutual recognition of academic achievements and the reimbursement of travel expenses. Now, joint seminars are added that will be thematically coordinated and time-limited in Basel and Freiburg.

The ideas and concepts of the cooperation were presented in spring 2017 at a conference of the Société Internationale d'Ethnologie et de Folklore and on various online platforms of the subject and honored as best practice.

Dr. Ulrike Langbein, lecturer at the Basel Seminar on Cultural Studies and European Ethnology, has jointly developed the concept for the study program with Prof. Dr. med. Markus Tauschek and dr. Sarah May from the Institute of Cultural Anthropology and European Ethnology of the Albert-Ludwigs-University in Freiburg i. Br.
